PERIOD 1 COURSESOld Testament 101withDavid CransonOffered: Period 1You cannot study the Old Testament without reading parts of it. So there will be reading. You cannot fully understand these concepts by reading alone. So there will be discussions. You cannot stay awake if you are only reading and talking. So there will be games. Fun games, too. I promise. Just ask a second or third year! Oh yeah, the final exam may or may not involve you getting thrown in the pool, fyi.

Overcoming Obstacles with Salima WatsonOffered: Period 1Everyone has challenges in life. Sometimes it starts at home; sometimes it’s at school; sometimes they come from friends, from media or music, from substances we crave, or relationships we need or want to control. We will look into God’s word to gain wisdom and a new perspective on these things.

Leadership

with Aaron OrrOffered: Period 2 I am super passionate about this subject and believe that you have been placed in the perfect place, for just a time as this, to be an assertive leader in the Kingdom of God! It's exciting to share life experiences and challenge one another to take authority, in whatever setting we are in, to be more effective leaders. Jesus is the best role model so we will definitely be spending time learning from Him and understanding at a deeper level the authority that He has granted to us.

Hearing God's Voice

by Mariah Hammond-OrrOffered: Period 2 First, we will look at the Bible for guidance and instructions, discuss what it looks like practically and how it impacts our lives, and then we will put it into practice and spend time listening and responding to the voice of our Creator!

You are Awesome!!with Erin LylisOffered: Period 1YOU ARE AWESOME. Isn’t that cool? This course explores all the things that make us awesome. We’ll take a deeper look at our talents, learn strategies on how to develop them fuller, and put them to good work. God made us with purpose, and He knows what’s up. We all have our differences, so let’s celebrate them! This course looks at the lives of many influential people, how they overcame adversity, and how you can too. Additional topics include stereotypes, individuality, the power of focus, fear, and how to handle negativity from within and from others.

Handling Those Emojis!with Ellen DillOffered: Period 1
This course takes a look at you and handling your emotions. Everyone is full of them, sometimes they even control us! Being a teenager can make it even harder to handle them, but no one wants to talk about it! Well, I want to talk about it with YOU! The Bible has a lot to say about our emotions, so we ought to know why God gave them to us, and how to handle them! Often we think things are sin that are normal feelings. Often we think emotions are just normal that are sinful! Let’s get right-minded about these feelings together!

PERIOD 2 COURSES

God's Great Shore and SeawithBob Jope, Drew Sinclair, Erin LylisOffered: Period 2
One of the most awe-inspiring ways in which we come to know God is through the examination of the world around us. This course will guide students through an exploration of the ecosystems local to the southern coast of Maine, with particular attention to how God calls us to interact with the environment. Time will also be spent in examining portions of the Bible related to these matters. Students will participate actively in discussion, read a textbook relating to these topics, possibly travel by canoe, learn to identify local plants and animals, touch some of those plants and animals, and have an extra session during the Ft. Williams trip.

New Testament 101

with David CransonOffered: Period 2 For any returning campers who took OT 101 this course will be very similar. We’ll address some different questions though. What is the difference between the New and Old Testaments? There are 27 books in the New Testament. What’s in them? Who wrote them? How is it that so many people’s lives have changed as a result of what’s in these documents? I am excited to offer this new course where we can explore Jesus’ life, teachings, and the teachings of the earliest Christians. Oh yeah, there will be games and candy. And the potential for a soaking in the pool :)

Now Walk It Out!with Salima WatsonOffered: Period 2
Are you all talk and No Walk? Do you know every word to “I can only Imagine?” Do you always know the the right thing to say? If you answered yes to any of these questions.... Or No to any of them, THIS is YOUR CLASS!! It’s easy go through the motions but take this class and we will take it from your brain and put it in your heart. From words and put it into actions. Join me as we talk about walking out our faith with a whole lot of Jesus and maybe a little bit of chocolate. It will be a sweet time! So, join me and let’s… “Walk It Out”

Starting Point! Living the Christian Life

with Mariah Hammond-Orr and Aaron Orr Offered: Period 2How can I use my Bible - and exactly what is it? What should I do for devotions at home? How can I best worship? What do Christians believe? These are some of the questions we will explore as we consider how to get started in a life of faith. Graduation requirement for class of 2013 and beyond.

Wednesday Ventures
On Wednesday, August 5th, CYC campers and staff participate in a variety of community service projects (Ventures). We have a number of sites with differing endeavors. Please read about each site and rank your top three interests. Preference will be given to third years campers, however, we will try to accommodate what we can.
Most of the groups leave right after breakfast. Some of the groups are local, within walking distance and those groups are back on campus for lunch in the dining hall. Other groups are out of the area and those groups bring a picnic lunch, returning shortly after lunch for afternoon free time.
Local Venture sites:
1. Oceanwood - Stay on-site and help make our camp facility with a project that gives back to our community and hosts.

2. Ocean Park Association - Help clean up the boardwalks to the beach! The Ocean Park community is very appreciative when we help with this particular project mid-summer!

3. The Linus Project - help make fleece blankets for ill and underprivileged children. (On-site).
4. Kamp Kids - Reading, playing, and caring for small children can be very rewarding for both the care-giver and for the free time provided to parents. Join us as we give back to some of our young parents' families by caring for their children!

Off-site Venture sites
5. Laudholm Land Trust - a conservation park in Wells, ME. Help with trail-clearing at this beautiful nature reserve! Bring your camera....photo ops abound!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The CYC Academic Program

The main purpose of the CYC Academic Program is to develop committed followers of Jesus Christ. Some of our related purposes are:
  • to inspire students to know more about God
  • to give students skills to learn more and to grow
  • to build a Christian community
  • to equip students to live out the faith
Exciting classes, high-quality teachers who love youth, and a curriculum centered on Christ make the Academic Program at CYC an enriching experience. Students choose from a wide variety of options to fulfill the graduation requirements and enjoy this adventure in learning. Each student takes two conference-long courses per year and also participates in seminars on Saturday.

Graduation Requirements: Each student must complete a Bible overview class, an introduction to the Christian faith course called “Starting Point” and one course centered on spiritual growth and living out the faith. Annually, each camper must also take two one-hour seminars or one two-hour seminar on Saturday morning.

Course Categories:

  1. Knowing the Bible (Old and New Testament)
  2. Spiritual Growth/Starting Point
  3. Growing and Living Out the Faith, including Leadership
Students are required to take one class from each of the categories, with emphasis on the first two categories in the first two years. They may take courses from other categories, however. Third-year students are required to take a Living Out the Faith class. There are Living Out the Faith Classes that are designated specifically as Leadership classes. A Leadership class will support the concept of women in church leadership. One aspect of this class will be to encourage students to seek God’s direction in terms of vocation, and students who feel that they may be called to professional Christian service will be encouraged to take the class. Therefore, it is our goal that each year at least one of the teachers will be an ordained pastor or commissioned missionary.

Saturday Seminars:
Students must participate in six hours of Saturday seminars over their three years at CYC. These courses will range from outreach, to Biblical application, to interest-based fun or exercise courses. They are offered as stand-alone one or two hour courses. The purpose of this configuration is to give students a solid foundation on which to base an active faith. In choosing their courses, students are encouraged to consider their own interests and gifts.

CAMPERS! Upon receipt of an email from me, please make your choices on this form. You do not have to be logged into gmail to do it. Please answer ALL questions and then hit submit at the end! I will be giving you a schedule with your classes on it at registration on Sunday 8/7/16!
